PFSP brought four counter-proposals to Thursday evening's bargaining session at Pioneer School, along with dozens of members who watched in solidarity. PPS brought NOTHING, and balked at an organizer taking photos of the two teams sitting together before negotiations even began.

SAFETY

We countered PPS' disappointing but unsurprising GUTTING of our initial safety proposal with language that brought back worker protections such as broader access to working walkie-talkies, bolstering site safety committee requirements, adequate staffing during recess so students can be properly supervised, and a stronger system for reporting incidents and safety concerns. We heard from two paraeducators on their experiences with student and environmental safety at PPS, and we hope PPS took their perspectives to heart while they consider their counter.

LUNCHES AND BREAKS

We also countered with a lunch and breaks proposal that reinserted previous agreed-upon language regarding break timing. PPS' recent counter removed this language, which would be considered "regressive bargaining" if intentional. While the mistake likely happened because of the last minute switch in bargaining team members, it’s still not acceptable. We gave PPS the opportunity to correct the mistake and look forward to seeing the agreed-upon language return to the article at the next session.

PPS' bargaining team, led now by the District's chief legal officer Sharon Toncray, brought no counter proposals to the table on Thursday night. They also seemed surprised when we declined to discuss Compensation until we receive their counter to our other economic proposals such as Vacations and Leaves. This rush by Management to sign a new contract before summer shows they're not serious about improving the working conditions of our members; they don't care about fixing what's broken.

Our bargaining team is committed to spending summer break researching and preparing to start the fight anew in the fall if it means our members get a contract that speaks to their daily reality.

No rushing our contract, no shortcuts on our future!

🤔 How can you support our fight for a strong contract? 🤔

  • Wear green on Thursdays! Show that you're proud to be in PFSP.
  • Support your community, become a member! Your dues go to providing mutual aid to our PFSP family and ensuring we can support each other no matter what.
  • Attend union events and actions! Get together with your coworkers over the summer to build long-lasting connections. Share invitations to events even if you can't attend yourself.
  • Run to be a site rep for the 26-27 school year! Get hands-on training and feel good knowing you're helping to advocate for the rights of PFSP staff at your site.

Our next bargaining session will begin at 2pm on June 9th at the PEC.
